B&B Chiarina Story
Chiarina Bed & Breakfast is located in a 1700’s house in the historical center of Muggio.
Lorenzo Bulla told Flavio Clericetti (born in 1945 and historical memory of Muggio and the Valley) that the house originally belonged to the Cantoni family, who was a well-known family of master builders and architects from Ticino – they built, among others, Villa Olmo in Como and Palazzo Serbelloni in Milan – and owned several properties in the village as well as the Landscape of Pianspessa. With time the property passed to the Bulla family until the 1950s, when Chiarina and her brother Lorenzo bought it from their cousin Elvezio (Bulla).
The building is made with materials coming from Monte Generoso. Its walls are covered with “bachitt da nisciöla” and “molta”; the stone floors in the corridors and the chestnut beams in the rooms are still those of the eighteenth century and all come from Monte Generoso; while in the kitchen there is a fireplace, also of that period, made of molera, the stone of Cagno and Malnate quarries.
The original structure included a stable for the goats, a room used as a dairy (the current cellar/ warehouse) on the ground floor and rooms for residential use on the upper floors. The eighteenth-century fireplace in the kitchen, above which there was a “graa” (also known as metato, a small room where chestnuts used to be dried), was the only source of heat in the house.
After almost a century and a major renovation, which has not reshaped the rooms but only replaced some materials, the house now returns to life and to welcome travelers.

The B&B is run by Richi who, after a lifetime in the financial sector, once he retired decided to realize his dream: to open a business in the hotel industry.
He enrolled in GastroTicino school of hospitality, completed an eight-month apprenticeship and subsequently gained experience in restaurants, hotels and resorts in Ticino and Italy. After he returned home, he and the Momcilovic family ran the inn La Peonia on Monte Generoso, an experience that ended in 2019 with the intention of moving on to the next one: the B&B Chiarina.
